General Information About Cork
Cork is a city in Ireland, located in the South-West Region, in the province of Munster. It is the second largest city in Ireland. In 2005 the city was selected as the European Capital of Culture. The city is built on the River Lee which splits into two channels at the western end of the city. You might often hear the Corkonians refer to the city as “the real capital” in reference to the city’s role as the centre of the anti-treaty forces during the Irish Civil War.
Cork has amazing culture. The city has been culturally diverse for many years, from Huguenot communities in the 17th century, through to Eastern European communities and a smaller numbers from African and Asian nations in the 20th and 21st centuries. This is reflected in the multi-cultural restaurants and shops, including specialist shops for East-European or Middle-Eastern food, Chinese and Thai restaurants, French patisseries, Indian buffets, and Middle Eastern kebab houses.
The Cork music scene is also truly great. The Cork Jazz Festival is definitely one to visit. It has run late October annually since 1978.
